One Belt, One Road

  • Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Maritime Silk Road (One Belt, One Road, “OBOR”), initiated by China, to create investment and trade opportunities between China and countries in Central Asia, West and East Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
  • Chinese President Xi Jinping first introduced the Silk Road Economic Belt initiative in Kazakhstan (September 7, 2013)
  • OBOR, or The New Silk Road, covers
    • 68 countries, 65% of global population,
    • appr. 40% of global GDP, a quarter of world’s trade
  • OBOR to benefit primarily all the 5 countries of Central Asia’s initial interest that have been central routes of the old Silk Road
  • Funding OBOR-related projects in these countries to be sourced mainly from $100bn AIIB and $40bn Silk Road Fund as well as IFIs
